Festive Getaways: The Very Best Christmas Breaks In The UK
With the festive period in full swing and just a handful of weeks left until the big day, there’s still time to get away from it all.
If you’ve been looking for a short break, perhaps over a weekend, the UK is bursting at the seams with great opportunities. Who needs to jump on a plane and spend a lot of money when the verdant hills of Great Britain have so much to offer? To get into the festive spirit, we thought we’d collect up our best suggestions for Christmas getaways. Some of these may well be hidden gems, and they’re all low-impact and ideal for all ages – particularly those looking for some peace and quiet at Christmas.
Christmas in Loch Lomond, Scotland
What imagery comes to mind when you think of Christmas? For many people it’s freezing weather, perhaps a dash of snowfall and a warm, cosy fire. But this image isn’t just a dream: it’s a fine description of the atmosphere you’ll find at Loch Lomond in Scotland. There are many lodges available at Christmas time, each made of wood and featuring wood burners or open fireplaces. The area frequently has snow around the Christmas period, to the delight of festive revellers. You’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere that’s as perfect to create that traditional Christmas scene as Loch Lomond. Just don’t forget your scarf and gloves!
The Shambles at Christmas in York
If you’ve never visited The Shambles in York, there are few better times to do so than at Christmas. A true spectacle of architecture, this street is home to a great many timber-framed buildings, giving the place a unique and characterful appearance. In fact, The Shambles directly inspired ‘Diagon Alley’ from the famed Harry Potter series of books and films. The street dates back as far as the 14th Century and is a superb place to celebrate the festive season – and maybe pick up some fudge! The Shambles is also ideally located within the centre of York city, so you’ll be within a stone’s throw of the castle, museums, cathedral and other points of interest.
Soak in the festive atmosphere at Lincoln Cathedral
Whilst the world-famous Christmas market is probably the best reason to head to Lincoln at Christmas time, it’s also a city that’s filled with festive spirit. Simply head up Steep Hill to the historic quarter of Lincoln and you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time. With cobbled streets and some of the oldest pubs in England, the Bailgate area of Lincoln is the perfect place to spend time in December. Even better, there are a number of premium hotels in that specific area – so there’s lots of accommodation options too.
We hope we’ve given you some Christmas inspiration for this year (or maybe next). The festive period is a great time to enjoy the UK, and with our suggestions you won’t need to break the bank! So if you’ve got a weekend free, why not try out one of these hotspots? Or should that be ‘coldspots’?
