Social media knows everything about you, now Facebook reads your thoughts?
Is social networking planning telepathic technology that can send brain waves between people, you would think this way of sharing is going beyond our privacy. Is sharing our photos and personal info not enough? A two-year project with Facebook will determine whether ‘Facebook reads your thoughts’ and accomplish bold things, they believe in this project they will be able capture a thought, a feeling, they believe it is ideal in its own perfect form. Sources describe it as the ‘communications and computing platform of the future’. They will have a secret Facebook “Building 8” division including PhD-level roles for a brain-computer interface engineer and a neural imaging engineer. Other roles include neuroimaging and electrophysiological data and developing novel non-invasive neuroimaging technologies.
We only hear about the phrase ‘reading minds’ to be about fortune tellers and the thought of ‘Facebook reads your thoughts’ just seems impossible, as well as privacy nightmare. However this is not the first time the company has indicated that they want to make telepathy a reality. Facebook’s billionaire founder, Mark Zuckerberg describes telepathy as the ultimate communication technology. He has already tried to be at the leading edge of virtual reality, in 2015 he said “One day, I believe we’ll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology. You’ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too, if you’d like. This would be the ultimate communication technology”. He believed last year that the world would move forward into virtual reality and towards even more immersive ways to communicate. He carried on to say “What I think we’re going to get to… past VR, is a world where more than just being able to capture what’s going on in a scene, I think you’re going to be able to capture a thought, what you’re thinking or feeling, in its kind of ideal and perfect form in your head and be able to share that with the world”.
Facebook states that is is really important that their audience has the power to this in the way they would like to. Even though that Zuckerberg has said this this technology is decades away, sources suggest Facebook is not waiting around. Furthermore, the company have their fair share of moments in pushing forward with technology, it could pose a threat to its competing social media. This type of technology its still in its early days, however decoding brainwaves has been some what surpassing in the research labs. Last year, scientists at the University of Washington, had a breakthrough with their research and they can now detect whether a subject was looking at a photo of a face or of a house.
Now tell us in the comments if you think Facebook is taking things too far with trying to read our thought’s.
