Hands Only CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
The British Heart Foundation has this month released a new advertising campaign aimed at giving people with no medical training the confidence to provide CPR.

The Hands Only CPR method is simple and easy to administer. Experts say it can be just as effective as heart compressions and mouth to mouth combined in keeping someone alive long enough for medical assistance to arrive.

Vinnie Jones fronts the new advertising campaign, in which he advises people to give chest compressions 'hard and fast' to the beat of The Bee Gees Stayin' Alive. The memorable advert - which takes its style from films such Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - has been applauded for being accessible, amusing and memorable.

It is hoped that more people will remember the simple advice at a time of crisis and feel confident to give lifesaving 'hands only' CPR.

The new method, which negates the need for mouth-to-mouth, ensures oxygen is still drawn into the body by the rise and fall of the chest cavity from the compressions. It can be effective at doing so for well over the usual three-minute window it takes for oxygen to leave the body when breathing stops, and for brain damage from oxygen starvation to occur.

What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation?
'Cardio' relates to the lungs and respiratory system, while 'pulmonary' relates to the heart and respiratory system. Hands Only Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation can help to ensure that someone who has stopped breathing continues to get oxygen to their vital organs until expert help arrives.

Are You Able to Help?
When someone stops breathing, the immediate actions of the first person on the scene are so important. The British Heart Association hopes that this Hand Only CPR advertising campaign will help them to remember what to do.

Whoever you are, whatever your age, it is a good idea to get training in emergency resuscitation. You never know when the situation may arise that someone needs your help. But it is especially important if you care for elderly friends or relatives or those with existing medical conditions that might make them susceptible to cardiopulmonary failure.
